We started Self Sustain SA because we were tired of waiting for systems that were never built to look after us.

Tired of Eskom deciding when our lights go on. Tired of watching the petrol price climb every month while our salaries stay flat. Tired of paying more for less at the grocery store. Tired of water that stops flowing without warning and municipalities that shrug when you call.

South Africa is a country of incredible resourcefulness. Our grandparents grew their own food, harvested rainwater, preserved what they had, and built communities that carried each other through hard times. Somewhere along the way, we handed all of that over to systems and corporations that do not have our best interests at heart.

Self Sustain SA is about taking it back.

We publish practical, honest, South African content about growing your own food, generating your own power, securing your own water, and building financial resilience outside of the systems that keep failing us. Whether you are in a flat in Hillbrow with a single windowsill, a house in Centurion with a patch of garden, or a smallholding in the Free State with five hectares, there is something here for you.

We are not survivalists. We are not doomsday preppers. We are ordinary South Africans who believe that every step you take toward self-sufficiency is a step toward freedom. A tomato plant on your balcony counts. A solar panel on your roof counts. A JoJo tank in your yard counts. Knowing which wild plants in your neighbourhood are edible and nutritious counts.

None of this requires wealth. It requires knowledge, and that is what we are here to share.

What we cover:

Energy independence. Food production and foraging. Water security. Fuel alternatives. Food preservation. Financial resilience. Community building.

Everything we write is specific to South Africa. Real brands, real prices, real climate zones, real challenges. No American homesteader content repackaged with a Rand symbol. This is content written by South Africans, for South Africans, about the country we actually live in.

We believe self-sufficiency is not a solo project. It works best when neighbours share knowledge, communities pool resources, and people teach each other what they know. Ubuntu is not just a philosophy. It is the most practical survival strategy this country has ever produced.

Welcome to Self Sustain SA. Start anywhere. Every step counts.
